Club Activities


Traditional luncheons and dinners include the Opera Black Tie Dinner, Archibald Prize Private Viewing followed by dinner, Cigar & Whisky Night on the Terrace, Melbourne Cup Luncheon, International Women’s Day Luncheon, Burns Supper, Christmas with St James Choir and the No Turkey Christmas Luncheon.


The Chess Group meet for a game or two and then dinner on the fourth Thursday of each month. There will be a regular Chess Group game on Thursday 23 August 2018. The Chess Group Australian Club vs UUSC will be held on Thursday 27 September, currently booked in the Card Room.


History Group luncheons are held throughout the year with a variety of knowledgeable and interesting speakers giving us their views on the relevant topic. Subjects covered include historical events of interest, accompanied by a two-course lunch with wine.

Health Club

The Health Club hosts several lunches per year, including Mid-year and Christmas. Subjects covered range from diet and fitness to a light-hearted review of members, yearly awards and the Health Club.

Vintage Group

Members over 60 years of age are invited to gather with similar Club Members and representatives of the Club for a relaxed and informative lunch featuring traditional club fare accompanied by fine wine. Vintage Lunches celebrate longevity and wisdom and all Members who qualify are encouraged to attend.


The UUSC Golfing Society meets four times a year to play on some of Sydney’s most prestigious golf courses. The first three events are individual stableford competitions where members compete for one of the three most desired golfing trophies in Sydney: the University Club Golf Cup, the Haldrich Golf Cup and the Alex McDonald Trophy.  UUSC members may invite visitors to these three events but only members can win the competition.

The final event of the year is a team event against The Australian Club played at Royal Sydney Golf Club for the Spoons Trophy. This match is generally held on the last Friday of October and is followed by a black tie dinner hosted by each club alternately.  The Spoons Trophy has been played since 1948 and is perhaps the most hotly contested annual event between the two clubs.

Book Club

The Book Club & Reading Group meets once a month in the Red Room to discuss a book of the month. Books selected by the Members for discussion cover a wide variety of subjects from classics to contemporary. After the meeting, members normally enjoy lunch in the Members Dining Room.

Literary Society

The Literary Society Dinner format is a dinner party at which participants (if they so choose) can read a poem or prose extract relevant to the monthly subject. This may sometimes be their own original work.

Honours & Awards

Held once a year and hosted by the President, the Honours Lunch is for Club members awarded in either the Queen’s Birthday or Australia Day Honours.

Young Members

The UUSC has a fast growing and socially creative young member group. Always pushing the boundaries whilst revelling in the traditions of Australia’s third oldest Club. The future is in fine hands.


Discovery luncheons are held during the course of the year with accomplished high-profile speakers giving us their interpretations on a variety of topics that are interest to members.

Friday Group

The Friday Group lunches in the Members Dining Room on the long table every Friday during the year. The Group meets in the Dangar Room from noon and lunches around 1pm. All are welcome.

Theme Dinners

Dinners with a special theme are popular at the club. Past examples include Hidden Treasures of Afghanistan, Burns night and Christmas in Paris, in which all courses showcase food themed to the occasion.

Wine Tastings

Throughout the year the Wine Committee invites members to tastings from a wide variety of award- winning wineries.

Sport Events

Sports luncheons comprising high profile sportsmen and women talking about the state of their sport, often in the lead up to a significant competition or match. These are very popular  and often fill the Members Dining room.
