For much of its 159 years, the Club has been honoured to have royal or vice-regal patronage, including His Royal Highness, The Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and more recently, Professor The Honourable Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO.
Our present Patron is His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d), the 38th Governor of New South Wales.
His Excellency was born in Wollongong (1953), attended Port Kembla High School and graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon in 1975. In a 42-year military career, he served variously with the Sydney University Regiment, the Irish Guards (British Army) and 1 Royal Australian Regiment. He also attended the US Army War College.
His Excellency was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) for leadership in Operation SOLACE (Somalia) and was later made a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) in 2010 for eminent service to the Australian Defence Force. He concluded his military career in June 2014 as Chief of the Defence Force (CDF).
Appointed Governor in October 2014, His Excellency maintains a continuing wide interest in the arts and in sport, as well as supporting organisations that promote inclusiveness, diversity and active citizenship.
His Excellency married Linda McMartin, a Sydney-born primary school teacher in 1977. They have three adult children.
Mrs Hurley’s career in education was in both the public and private school systems until her retirement from full-time teaching in July 2011. She has been a keen community worker with Canberra Hospital and with Meals-on-Wheels and is an enthusiast for choirs and singing.
